Hello, I’m Amber, a 32 year old Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2007 and my Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology in 2013. In the early years of my career, I worked with clients struggling with substance abuse and addiction and gained valuable knowledge and insight into this complicated disorder. As much as I loved working with this population, I knew I had a passion and interest for working with another clientele.
As a young adult, I had a complicated relationship with food. Binge eating, restrictive food eating patterns, body image issues and “food rules” dominated my life. I didn’t know HOW to eat healthy when I was younger and I didn’t know how to appreciate the body I had. To make things even more difficult, I didn’t have a lot of help or guidance for my issues. Thus, I began to gravitate towards any type of nutrition and health topics I could find to help me learn how to eat healthier, have a better relationship with food and how to manage my own disordered eating tendencies.
Through lots of trial and error and a personal passion to pursue healthier alternatives, I slowly began to develop better eating habits. And now, several years later I am happy to report I no longer have food rules, no longer bury my feelings in 5 bowls of Cheerios and have learned to embrace ALL the foods!
As someone who grew up struggling with body image issues, restricted eating patterns, binge eating and more “food rules” than I could count, I KNEW I wanted to help others in this area. My work with substance abuse addictive clients revealed MANY similarities between those that seek comfort from illicit substances and those that seek comfort in food. I realized a lot of what I already knew could be valuable in helping those struggling with disordered eating.
In 2014, I decided to return to my education and gained a certification in Eating Disorders and Obesity. I opened my private practice, Madden Wellness Counseling and now I focus on helping individuals who struggle with everything from severe food addiction and binge eating to those that maybe just want to improve their meal planning skills and learn some healthier alternatives. I love what I do and I love that everyday I’m getting to provide help to someone else, especially when I know how long the road to recovery can seem.
